Banglore-An Asian Golf Playground
"Golf Tourism is a multi billion dollar business worldwide"… is an often quoted fact around the boardrooms of inbound tour operators into India.
Hence the staging of the Toyota Karnataka Golf Festival at the beautiful Eagleton Golf Course couldn't have come at a better time for Indian golf promotion.
The three-day inaugural edition held from October 2nd to 4th, 2009 in Bangalore saw a unique blend of celebrities and corporates slugging it out for various prizes.
90 teams of 3 confirmed participation to make a tournament of 270 golfers, establishing the "Toyota Karnataka Golf Festival" in its first edition as the largest single venue tournament in Karnataka.
The winning team won a 7 day holiday on the Golden Chariot Luxury Train courtesy Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation.
The major attraction for the participants was the chance to win one of the five handicap division titles and become part of the Indian team at the World Golfers Championship (WGC) in Marbella.
The tournament also featured the Ballantine's Long Drive Challenge where prizes were awarded for the winner of the contest in each group of four players, on each day and overall for the tournament.
Leading sportsmen like Syed Kirmani, G.R. Vishwanath, Sujith Somasunder and Prakash Padukone rubbed shoulders with the corporates giving the tournament a unique edge.
Finally, David D' Souza, Stef Stangret , Sudarshan Maney, KR Srimurthy and Tripta Ahluwalia emerged the overall winners in various handicap categories.
A half an hour show capsule on the tournament was aired on Zee Sports on 1st November, '09
